Cessna 177 Series Aircraft Information
A light, high-wing general aviation aircraft, the Cessna 177 Cardinal, was intended to replace the Cessna 172 Skyhawk. The capacity of the 177 is for one crew member and three passengers. The empty weight is 1495 lb (680 kg) and the maximum takeoff weight is 2500 lb (1100 kg). Cruise speed is 124 knots (143, 230 km/h) and maximum speed is 136 knots (157 mph, 250 km/h).
The aircraft was produced from 1968 to 1978. During this time frame, 4295 Cessna 177s were built. Various models produced include the 177, 177A, 177B, and 177RG. The Cessna 177/180 Conversion is also available. Designed in the mid-1960s the 177 featured newer technology such as a cantilever wing with a laminar flow airfoil. The aircraft is the only high-wing single-engined Cessna to have both fixed landing gear and a cantilever wing without strut bracing since the Cessna 190 and 195.
The original Cessna Model 177 was introduced in late 1967 with a 150 horsepower engine. One of Cessna's design goals for the 177 was allowing the pilot an unobstructed view when making a turn. A cardinal logo may be seen on many 177s and 177RGs.
The 177 had more power than the 145 hp Cessna 172. Even with its 150 hp engine the Cessna 177 was considered "underpowered". In 1969, Cessna introduced the 177A featuring a 180 hp version of the same four-cylinder Lycoming used in the 177. This additional power increased cruise speed by 11 knots. The Cessna 177A also included fiberglass, downward-shaped, conical wing tips.
The Cessna 177B had a new wing airfoil and a constant-speed propeller. The aircraft was introduced in 1970. The 177B had a maximum takeoff weight of 2500 lb (1135 kg) which was increased from 2350 lb (1067 kg). The Cardinal Classic, a deluxe version of the Cessna 177B, has leather upholstery, a table for the rear passengers, and a 28-Volt electrical system. Cessna built the Cardinal Classic in 1978.
In 1971, Cessna began producing the Cessna 177RG with retractable landing gear. The 177RG has a 200 hp Lycoming IO-360 engine to offset the almost 300 lb (136 kg) increased in maximum weight, much of which was from the electrically-powered hydraulic gear mechanism. These advancements result in an increased cruise speed of 146 knots. Models of the 177RG built in France by Reims are referred to as the Reims F177RG.
Today, the Cessna 177 Cardinal is considered a desirable aircraft to own. The 177 offers large doors for easy entry, reasonable performance for the power, active owners groups, and an attractive appearance. The 177 offers better upward visibility than the 172 because of its steeply rake windshield and more aft-mounted wing. The aircraft also makes an excellent platform for aerial photography.
