The Piper Comanche single engine series was manufactured from 1957-1972 with 4857 aircraft built. Various models of the Comanche include the Comanche 180, Piper Comanche 250, Comanche 260, Comanche 260B, Piper Comanche 260C, Comanche 260TC, Comanche 400, Piper Twin Comanche, Turbo Twin Comanche, Twin Comanche CR, and PA-33. In 1972, rains from Hurricane Agnes cause the great Susquehanna River flood of 1972, which flooded the manufacturing plant and destroyed airframes, parts, and most of the tooling necessary for production of the aircraft. Instead of re-build the tooling, Piper chose to abandon production of the Comanche and continue with two newer designs.
The Comanche 260 has a 260 hp engine and the four versions of the 260 include the PA-24-260, PA-24-260B, PA-24-260C, and PA-24-260TC. The 260 has an empty weight of 1700 lb and a gross weight of 2900 lb. The aircraft had four seats and a 90 US gallon capacity auxiliary fuel system was available as an option. Advertised cruise speed was 142-161 knots with a fuel burn of 10-14 gallons per hour. Built from 1970 to 1972, the Comanche 260TC had a turbo normalizing system of dual manually controlled Rajay turbochargers.
