American Champion 7 Series Aircraft Information
The American Champion 7AC, also known as the Champ, is a single engine, conventional landing gear, two seat aircraft designed for personal use or flight training. The empty weight of the aircraft is 740 lbs (325 kg) and the maximum takeoff weight is 1,220 lbs (533 kg). The cruising speed is 85 mph (137 km/h), the stall speed is 38 mph (62 km/h), and the maximum speed is 129 mph. The 7AC uses one Continental A65-8 engine.
The 7 series competed highly with the Piper Cub series making the designs quite similar. Both feature tandem seating but the Champ can be flown solo from the front providing better visibility than the Cub that can be flown solo from the rear seat only. The Champ also features a wider cabin.
The main body in the American Champion 7 Series is welded metal tubing with the outer fuselage made of wooden longerons and formers and are covered with fabric as are the wings and tail surfaces. The wings of the 7 series feature aluminum ribs and are strut braced. The landing gear can be modified with a tricycle model or a reversed tricycle model. The 7AC, 7CCM, 7DC, and the 7EC models can be modified into seaplanes with added floats and vertical stabilizer fins.
The variations feature several modifications. The 7AC Champion (the Champ) is the original version with conventional landing gear and shock absorption in the main gear. The 7BCM (L16A) was the first upgraded model. It features no-bounce landing gear and was turned into the military L-16A used by the USAF, US Army, and National Guard. There was an upgraded model of the L-16A produced named the L-16B (7CCM). It features a more powerful engine, hydraulic brakes, an increased gross weight, and an enlarged vertical tail. Some makes of this model were sent immediately to civilian markets as the 7CCM. The next model released was the 7DC. It uses a Continental C85 engine and the vertical stabilizer was extended forward. The American Champion 7EC Traveler features a Continental C90 engine and is based on the 7CCM. A luxury version called the Champion Deluxe was also released. The American Champion 7FC Tri-Traveler was an improved version of the 7EC only changing the landing gear from conventional to reversed tricycle. Also available in the 7EC line is the 7ECA Aurora. The American Champion 7GC Sky Trac is the 7EC with a Lycoming O-290-D2B engine and three seats. The American Champion 7GCA is the agricultural version of the 7GC with a higher powered Lycoming O-320-A2B engine. The 7GCBC, the 7GCBC Explorer, and the 7GCBC High Country Explorer are also part of the GC series. The final variant produced was the American Champion 7ACA. It more closely resembles the American Champion 7GCAA Citabria series. It features a Franklin 2A engine which required a change in the cowling and the main strut gear was replaced with steel legs.
