    Cessna L19 Series Aircraft Information

The Cessna L-19/O-1 Bird Dog has the capacity for two crew members. Introduced in 1950, the L-19/Cessna O-2 Bird Dog was a liaison and observation aircraft. The Bird Dog had a lengthy career in the U.S. military and in other countries. Empty weight is 1614 lb (732 kg) and maximum takeoff weight is 2400 lb (1089 kg). The maximum speed is 130 mph (209 km/h) and the rate of climb is 1040 ft/min (317 m/min).

    Variants of the L-19 include the L-19A Bird Dog (Cessna 305A), TL-19A Bird Dog, XL-19B, XL-19C, TL-19D (Cessna 305B), T-19E (Cessna 305C), OE-1, OE-2 (Cessna 321), O-1A, TO-1A, O-1B, O-1C, O-1D, TO-1D, O-1E, L-19E Bird Dog (Cessna 305E), O-1G (Cessna 305D), CO-119, SIAI-Marchetti SM.1019, and Cessna 325. The aircraft was the first all-metal fixed wing airplane ordered for and by the United States Army.

The U.S. Army wanted an aircraft that could adjust artillery fire, perform liaison duties, and preferably be constructed of all metal. Once the U.S. Army issue the specification of a two-seat liaison monoplane, Cessna submitted the Cessna Model 305A. The Model 305A was developed from the Cessna 170. The aircraft was a single-engine, light-weight, strut-braced high-winged monoplane with a tailwheel landing gear.

Cessna received a contract from the U.S. Army for 418 airplanes. These aircraft were designed the L-19A Bird Dog. The name Bird Dog was the result of a contest Cessna held for employees to name the aircraft. Bird Dog was chosen because the role of the new aircraft was to find the enemy and orbit overhead until artillery could be brought to bear on the enemy.
