    Diamond DA40 Aircraft Information

Constructed from composite materials, the Diamond DA40 Diamond Star, is an Austrian four-seat, single engine, light aircraft. The DA40 has the capacity for one crew member and three passengers. The empty weight is 1755 lb (795 kg) and the maximum takeoff weight is 2645 lb (1198 kg). The cruise speed is 150 knots (173 mph, 279 km/h) and the stall speed is 49 knots (56 mph, 91 km/h). The rate of climb is 1120 ft/min (5.69 m/s). The DA40 was developed as a four-seat version of the earlier Diamond DA20 and was built in both Austria and Canada.

Variant models of the aircraft include the Diamond DA40 model, DA40D, DA40F, and T-52A. The DA40 is a low-wing cantilever monoplane with fixed nose-wheel landing gear and a T-tail. The first three prototypes were powered by Rotax 914, Continental IO-240, and Lycoming IO-360 engines respectively. In October 2000, JAR23 certification of the IO-360 production variant was obtained. Production of the Lycoming engine variant was moved to Canada in 2002; while the Austrian factory concentrated on diesel-engine variants.

The aircraft has only officially appeared in three versions. These versions are the DA40, DA40D, and DA40F. The aircraft have been sold under various marketing names, such as the Diamond DA40 XLS and the Diamond DA40-180 Star but these names are not officially recognized by the authorities that have certified the aircraft. The initial DA40 was powered by a fuel injected Textron Lycoming IO-360 M1A engine. In late 2006, the XL and FP models were released. The Diamond DA40XL features a constant-speed propeller and a 180 hp Lycoming IO-360-M1A fuel injected engine. The DA40-F features a fixed-pitch propeller and a 180 hp Lycoming O-360-A4M engine, which has a carburetor rather than fuel injection and a more basic interior. The DA40-D was made in 2002 and is not certified in the US. The aircraft uses a Thielert Centurion 135 hp design engine and burns diesel or jet fuel.
