Grumman Mallard Aircraft Information

The Grumman G-73 Mallard is a twin engine, large amphibious aircraft. The empty weight of the aircraft is 8,750 lbs (3,970 kg) and the maximum takeoff weight is 14,000 lbs (6,350 kg). The cruise speed is 157 kts (181 mph, 290 km/h) and the maximum speed is 187 kts (215 mph, 346 km/h). The Mallard uses two {Pratt & Whitney} PT6A-34 engines though later models were replaced with more modern turboprop engines. The aircraft seats ten passengers and two pilots.

The Mallard was designed after the success of the Grumman Goose and the Grumman Widgeon took off. The Mallard is a larger model built for commercial use. It maintains the features of the two smaller models, the high wings with underwing floats, twin radials, a large straight tail, and retractable landing gear. The main changes made to the Mallard model were the tricycle landing gear, two step hull, wingtip fuel tanks, and a stressed skin.

Grumman marketed the Grumman Mallard towards regional airline operations specifically city-to-city hops, harbor-based trips on the eastern seaboard. Most of the Mallards produced were not used for this purpose, in fact the availability of smaller airports and postwar surplus aircraft sales cut into the market for the Mallard so many were used for corporate transport.

The development of the Turbo Mallard gave new life to the sales of the aircraft line. The improvements included higher seating capacity of up to seventeen passengers and higher-powered turbine engines.
