Most Maules still have most of the original factory avionics. This plane has a well laid-out, fully functional IFR panel with a Garmin GNC 650 WAAS/GPS/NavCom and a Garmin GI-106 Indicator and a Garmin GTX-345 Transponder. The audio panel is PMA3000B. All this was installed during the engine overhaul. The #2 radio is a King KX155 TSO ILS/Loc. All the flight and engine instruments are in perfect working order. I have flown quite a few hours in hard IFR. The approach capabilities of the GNC650 are outstanding.
Straight-up airplane with no damage history, no corrosion.
Gann Aviation, Inc., Lafayette, GA 6/1/18. Overhauled to new factory limits and balanced to 1 gram I/A/W Lycoming overhaul manual and service bulletins. All AD's C/W through Tdata 2018-10. Crankcase, crankshaft, tach shaft, rocker arms, rods, lifters and gears reconditioned. Fuel pump, carburetor, magneto, prop governor, fuel pump, alternator overhauled. All new Millenium cylinders, camshaft, oil cooler, main bearings, lock tabs, bolts, nuts and bushings, pistons, pins pin plugs, rings, clinder base nuts, rocker arm shafts, bushings and buttons, oil return lines and hoses, clamps, intake hoses, spark plugs, oil filter with spin-on filter adapter, gaskets and seals.
The interior is good. I'd rate it a solid 8. I recovered the front seats. The back sling seats have hardly been used since new, since the plane usually flies with the back seat removed and stored. The paint and fabric are original. There are several places where the paint has flaked or cracked. Most of these have been treated to protect the fabric, which is in very good shape. I've owned the airplane for 8 years, and the fabric has always tested good. I've never minded the worn paint, but I've attempted to price the plane with that in mind.
This airplane won't win a beauty contest, but it's just as solid as factory original. I have flown two long cross-country trips to Utah and Colorado with the cargo compartment chock full of camping gear, coolers, spare parts, etc. I've been in and out of very short dirt, gravel and grass strips and dry creek beds in high density altitude conditions. The plane is simply a great performer and a pleasure to fly. The engine and prop are both low time SOH. Compressions at the March 2024 annual were 72/74/74/72. I plan for cruise at about 110kts and 8+ gph at 55-60%. It'll go faster, but I don't have the need. The current combination of 26" Goodyears and the Alaska Bush Wheel "BabyBaja" tailwheel is perfect for rough strips, but very gentle on grass or asphalt. I routinely land on grass in about 300 ft, with takeoff on grass about 500. Admittedly, I'm almost always single-pilot, so your experience would vary according to pilot/passenger weight and fuel load. If you've been waiting for a good, straight, no damage history Maule to come around, this may be the one for you. Yes, it needs paint, but it's flown great for my eight years, and I haven't missed the sparkle of new paint. I welcome your call for additional info or to chat about Maules. Of the 7 planes I've owned, this has been my favorite. At my age, it's time to downsize. I no longer have the mission for this great bird. Hope it's the right one for you. Cheers.
