The McDonnell Douglas MD-500 Series is a series of utility military and civilian helicopters. The MD 500 is a development of the Hughes 500 series.
The aircraft was designed to meet the needs of the US Army requirements for a light observation helicopters. The MD 500 civil version was later remodeled with a more powerful engine as the MD 500C. The 500C has an empty weight of 1,088 lbs (493 kg) and a maximum takeoff weight of 2,250 lbs (1,157 kg). The aircraft has a cruise speed of 125 kts (144 mph, 232 km/h) and the maximum speed is 152 kts (175 mph, 282 km/h). The 500C is powered by an Allison 250-C20 turboshaft engine. The MD 500D was built to replace the previous models. The 500D has a more powerful engine, a new five-blade rotor system, and a T-tail. In 1982 the 500D was replaced by the MD 500E that had a pointed nose and more head and legroom.
The MD 520N version is based on the 500E. A controllable thruster was added to the end of the tail boom to use for yaw control. The empty weight of the aircraft is 1,636 lbs (742 kg) and the maximum takeoff weight is 3,350 lbs (1,520 kg). The cruise speed is 135 kts (155 mph, 250 km/h) and the maximum speed is 152 kts (175 mph, 282 km/h). The 520N is powered by an Allison 250-C20R turboshaft engine. A stretched, eight seat model of the 520N is the MD 600N. The empty weight of the 600N is 2,100 lbs (952 kg) and the maximum takeoff weight is 4,100 lbs (1,860 kg). The cruise speed is 135 kts (155 mph, 250 km/h) and the maximum speed is 152 kts (175 mph, 282 km/h). It is powered by an Allison 250-C47 turboshaft engine.
The hot and high version of the series is the MD 530F. The empty weight of the aircraft is 1,591 lbs (722 kg) and the maximum takeoff weight is 3,550 lbs (1,610 kg). The cruise speed is 135 kts (155mph, 250 km/h) and the maximum speed is 152 kts (175 mph, 282 km/h). The 530F is powered by an Allison 250-C30 turboshaft engine.
