Beechcraft Sport Aircraft Information
First flown in 1932, the Beechcraft Model 17 Staggerwing is an American biplane with an atypical negative stagger. The capacity of the aircraft is for one crew member and three passengers. The empty weight is 2540 lb (1150 kg) and the loaded weight is 4250 lb (1930 kg). The cruise speed is 202 mph (176 knots, 325 km/h) and the maximum speed is 212 mph (184 knots, 341 km/h). The rate of climb is 1500 ft/min (7.6 m/s) and the landing speed is 45 mph (39 knots, 72 km/h).
785 Staggerwings were produced from 1933 to 1949. Variant models of the aircraft include the 17, B17, C17, D17S Staggerwing, E17, F17, G17, and several military designations. In 1932 the Staggerwing was designed as a larger, powerful, and fast biplane built specially for the business executive. The aircraft set the standard for private passenger planes for many years. During its time, it was considered to be the premier executive aircraft flying.
The unusual negative stagger wing configuration and unique shape maximized pilot visibility while minimizing the tendency to stall. The fuselage of the Beechcraft Staggerwing is fabric covered and faired with wood formers and stringers over a welded, steel tube frame. The aircraft featured retractable conventional landing gear along with streamlining, light weight, and powerful radial engines.
