    Bell 47 Series Aircraft Information

The Bell 47 series was based on the Model 30 helicopters and was the first helicopter certified for civilian use in 1946. The line features two bladed light single engine aircraft. Earlier versions were varied in appearance with some having an open cockpit and others having a sheet metal cabin, several with four wheel landing gear, and some with fabric covered structures.

The Bell 47 and the Bell 47A were both powered by Franklin piston engines. The military version of the 47, the Bell 47B (YR-13/HTL-1), uses a Franklin O-335-1 engine. An agricultural and utility version, the Bell 47B-3, was made with open crew positions and was also modified into the Bell "Airmailer" for the US Postal Service to use. The models to appear with a noticeable 'goldfish bowl' cabin canopy was the Bell 47D and the Bell 47D-1 with open tubework tailbooms and a three seat configuration. The 47E used the more powerful Franklin 6V4-200-C32 engine. The Bell 47G model introduced the twin saddle bag fuel tank system and combined the three seat model of the 47D-1 and a Franklin 149 kw engine. The Bell 47G-2 upgraded engines with a Lycoming VO-435 for the United Kingdom military and the Bell 47G-2A uses a 179 kW version of the VO-435 engine. The Bell 47G-3 is powered by a Franklin 6VS-335-A supercharged engine while the Bell 47G-3B is powered by Lycoming TVO-435 turbocharged engine. The Bell 47G-4 is a three seat model with a Lycoming TVO-435 engine. The last model to be produced by Bell was the Bell 47G-5A utility model that later had a two seat modification made known as the Ag-5. The Bell 47H-1 version has an enclosed cabin and fuselage and seats three. The last civilian model is the Bell 47J-2A Ranger. It seats four and is powered by a Lycoming VO-435 engine.

Military versions of this line include the Agusta A.115, the Meridional/Agusta EMA 124, and the Kawasaki KH-4.
