The Bell UH-1 Iroquois series features a line of military transport helicopters. The first model in the series is the XH-40 and the YH-40. Essentially the same design, the XH series was the first to use a turbine engine. The US military expanded on the XH line redesignated the Bell 204 series into the XH-40 and the YH-40 followed closely behind as a redesign with a longer cabin to provide higher capacity transport.
The UH-1A was originally named the HU-1A. It was the first US helicopter that was turbine equipped to go into production and sent to Vietnam for the 57th Medical Detachment service. The original designation 'HU' earned the line its Huey nickname. The UH-1A were powered by a Lycoming T53-L-1 engine.
The Bell UH-1B (HU-1B) came equipped with a more powerful engine, a Lycoming T53-L-5, a longer cabin, and revised main rotor blades. The larger cabin allowed for accommodation of seven passengers. Later models of the 1B used Lycoming T53-L-9 and L-11 engines allowing a higher gross weight. The civil version is the Bell 204B.
The UH-1C was developed to be a gunship version and was fitted with a new Bell 540 rotor system to increase the power of the aircraft. The increase in power allowed the helicopter to carry heavier weapons systems. Its size and carry ability earned it the nickname the Huey Hog.
The UH-1D was designed for the US Army's desire to have a version of the shorter bodied Huey gunships that could also carry troops in transport. The fuselage was expanded in length with new sideways facing seats on the sides of the transmission allowing for seating of 15 troops with four crew members.
The UH-1E was made to replace the Cessna O-1 and the Kaman OH-43D for the US Marines. The UH-1B was modified by using all aluminum construction, a rotor brake, a roof mounted rescue hoist, and special avionics to coordinate with the Marine Corps ground frequencies. It was used for troop transport and gunship carry.
The Bell UH-1F won the bid for the US Air Force support helicopter to use on its missile bases. The special version of the UH-1B uses the General Electric T58 turboshaft engine. The modification resulted in a shorter cabin but a longer tail boom.
The Bell UH-1H was powered by a Lycoming T53-L-13 engine. This variation of the 1D model became very popular not only in the US but in several other countries as well. The civil model is the Bell 205A.
Modified after the UH-1E, the US Navy requested an unarmoured and without any armament with a larger engine. This model was called the Bell UH-1L and was used in Vietnam where it was modified to carry bombs and munitions.
Other variations include the HH-1K, UH-1N, UH-1P, TH-1A, XH-1A, NUH-1B, N9, YUH-1D, HH-1D, TH-1E, TH-1F, CUH-1H, CH-118, HH-1H, EH-1H, UH-1J, EH-1X, JUH-1, UH-1V, TH-1H, UH-1M, and the UH-1Y.
