The Cessna 182 Skylane is a light aircraft with a single engine and four seats.
With its introduction in 1956, various models of the Cessna 182 and Turbo Skylane include the Cessna 182, 182A Skylane, 182B Skylane, 182C Skylane, 182D Skylane, 182E Skylane, 182F Skylane, 182G Skylane, 182H Skylane, 182I, 182J Skylane, 182K Skylane, 182L Skylane, 182M Skylane, 182N Skylane, 182O, 182P Skylane, 182Q Skylane, 182R Skylane, 182S Skylane, 182T Skylane, 182RG Skylane, T182 Skylane, T182T Skylane, TR182RG Skylane, and TR182RG II Skylane. The 182 is the second most popular Cessna model after the 172. More than 23,000 Cessna 182s have been built, including a version with retractable landing gear.
With introduction as a tricycle gear variant of the Cessna 180, the 182 debuted in 1957 along with the name Skylane. Models have been improved regularly to include features such as an enlarged baggage compartment, wider fuselage, higher gross weights, landing gear changes, and a swept vertical fin with rear "omni-vision" window. Cessna began offering the Garmin G1000 glass cockpit as an optional upgrade to the Cessna 182 Skylane in 2005. Today the class cockpit is standard equipment.
The Cessna 182 is an all-metal aircraft with some parts, such as the engine cowling nosebowl and wingtips, made of fiberglass or thermoplastic material. The Cessna 182's wing has the same planform as the smaller {c172} and the larger 205/206 series. Wing details such as flap and aileron design are the same as the 172 and are not like the 205/206.
The Cessna R182 and TR182 models with retractable landing gear were offered from 1978-1986, without and with engine turbo charging. The Cessna R182 became known as the "Skylane RG". These models of the Cessna 182 offer 10-15% improvement in climb and cruise speeds over fixed gear models. In the Skylane RG, the landing gear retraction system uses hydraulic actuators powered by an electrically-driven pump. This system includes a gear position warning. The gear position warning emits an intermittent tone through the cabin speaker when the landing gear is in the retracted position and either the throttle is reduced below 12" MAP or the flaps are extended beyond 20 degrees. The landing gear may be lowered using a hand pump to pressurize the hydraulic system in the event of a hydraulic pump failure. However, there is not an alternative procedure for retracting the landing gear.
