Manufactured in the United States before World War II, the Bellanca 14-7 and its successors were a family of light aircraft. The capacity of the 14 Series was for one crew member and two passengers. Maximum speed was 133 mph (214 km/h).
Bellanca believed that it could successfully sell smaller 3-4 seat aircraft, since it had already established itself in the market for 6-8 seat aircraft. Variant models of the 14 Series include the Junior 14-7, 14-7L, 14-9, 14-9L, 14-10L, 14-12, and T14-14. Equipped with a Lenape LM-5 engine the 14-7 was a modern, low-wing cantilever monoplane with a fuselage intended to contribute lift to the design. The 14-9 version was the first US light aircraft to be mass-produced with retractable undercarriage. This was accomplished by the main wheels rotated aft, up into wells in the wings.
Production ceased after the 14-21 in 1941. When an attempt to market a militarized version as a trainer was unsuccessful, Bellanca began to work as a military subcontractor for the duration of World War II. Bellanca returned to the 14 Series to design the Bellanca 14-13 and its successors after the war.
