Cirrus SR20 Series Aircraft Information
A piston engine composite monoplane, the Cirrus SR20, seats four. The SR20 has the capacity for one crew member and three passengers. The empty weight is 2080 lb (945 kg) and the maximum takeoff weight is 3050 lb (1386 kg). The cruise speed is 155 knots (288 km/h) and the rate of climb is 828 ft/min (4.2 m/s). The SR20 is known for being the first production general aviation aircraft equipped with a parachute for spin recovery.
Production of the Cirrus SR20 began in 1999. The SR20 has a fully digital avionics suite with one 10-inch Avidyne FlightMax primary flight display and one multi-function display. GPS navigation, conventional radio navigation, and radio communication are provided by a pair of Garmin GNS430s. Like the SR22, the SR20 is equipped with a Cirrus Aircraft Parachute System (CAPS). The CAPS is a large parachute which can be deployed to lower the entire aircraft to the ground safely in the event of an emergency. The aircraft became the first to achieve the new European Aviation Safety Agency certificate for aircraft imported into the European Union on June 1, 2004.
An updated model that incorporates the changes from the SR22 G3 airframe was introduced in 2007. The SR20 G3 Model included the new lighter SR22 wing which has greater wing area. The larger wing increased the SR20's cruise speed by 6-7 knots. The SR20 G3 includes a lighter wing of greater area; increased useful load by 50 lbs; increased fuel capacity to 56 US gallons; re-designed landing gear; new recognition lights using LEDs; improved aircraft handling; improved aerodynamics; improved heat and ventilation; dual-redundant GPS-WAAS-certified Garmin GNS 430W comm-navigators; and S-TecAutopilot.
Optimized for the low-end private ownership and flight training market the Cirrus SRV model is a VFR-only version of the SR20. As a VFR-only version is omits some standard equipment available on the SR20 such as wheel fairings. The SRV model was updated to a G3 configuration with the SR22 wing in 2008. The SRV was discontinued in 2010 and Cirrus no longer offers an aircraft with analog instruments.
The Cirrus SR20 is operated by private individuals and companies, as well as being a popular choice with many flying schools. The largest flying school operators of the SR20 are the Delta Connection Academy, Western Michigan University College of Aviation, and Purdue University. The Cirrus aircraft are supported by the Cirrus Owners and Pilots Association (COPA).
