The Fairchild Merlin, also known as the Swearingen Merlin, is a twin engine, pressurized business aircraft. When Swearingen first started development on the Merlin, he used the Beechcraft Twin Bonanza and Queen Air and made modifications to both bodies. He called the experiment the Excalibur. The hybrid aircraft featured a new vertical fin and fuselage with Twin Bonanza landing gear and Queen Air wings. Later versions were further modified with different engines, winglets, multi-blade propellers, and revised interiors.

Originally manufactured by Swearingen Aircraft, the Fairchild Metro series is now produced by Fairchild in San Antonia, Texas. The Metro can seat 19 passengers with one or two crew members. The aircraft is pressurized with two turboprop engines. The empty weight is 8,737 lbs (3,963kg) and the maximum takeoff weight is 14,500 lbs to 16,000 lbs (6,577 kg to 7,257 kg). The cruise speed is 278 kts (318 mph, 515 km/h) and the maximum speed is 311 kts (355 mph, 576 km/h). The two engines are Garrett AiResearch TPE-331 turboprops with continuous alcohol-water injection and the four-bladed propeller are McCauley 4HFR34C652 or Dowty Rotol R.321/4-82-F/8.

The Metro is a development of the Fairchild Merlin series. The changes made to the design include an option for a small Rocket-Assisted Take OFF rocket placed in the tail cone, larger squared-oval windows, and improvements on takeoff in hot and high airfields.
